About Us

Maieutica

Thought. Form. Meaning.

Maieutica is an independent company promoting craftsmanship, born from the belief that things of real value are not produced or replicated by machines — they are born from genuine talent, experience, and the work of human hands and minds. We work across crafts including book publishing, writing and text work, as well as drawing, graphic art, and handicraft. We combine thought and action, word and matter, idea and form.

The name Maieutica comes from the Socratic art of drawing out meaning — helping thoughts, stories, and meanings come into the world. That is exactly what we do in our work: we do not create in bulk, work on an assembly line, or simplify by force. We work through process, with care and responsibility, bringing out value through discovery, creation, and shaping.

In the books we publish, not only the content matters, but also form, rhythm, and quality. In handicraft objects and graphic works, what matters is the trace of the hand, the material, and the intention. All elements of Maieutica are united by one thing: respect for creative work. This is not a place of production and trends, but a place where an artist's thought and experience take form, and form gains meaning. Maieutica is a space for those seeking authenticity, authorial value, products with a story, and meaning. Meaning is born from the process.

Jagoda Miga
Founder of Maieutica / Szkicerka

Jagoda Miga

Her journey with art began in 2012, and her first clumsy drawing attempts featured fantasy characters and creatures. Over time, her growing skills allowed her to create her first portraits and animal drawings. With each new drawing she became better. She taught herself through trial and error, as well as by observing other artists, which helped her discover new creative techniques and broaden her horizons.

As time went on, she began creating paintings, marker graphics, pastel drawings, and works in many other techniques. In secondary school she organized her first exhibition; that was also when the first people decided to commission portraits from her. Drawing became her additional occupation outside work, allowing her to earn money for psychology studies. Keeping up with the times, she began using digital technologies in her creative work, taking her first steps in computer graphics and illustration design.

She created the Szkicerka brand, under which she produces book illustrations, advertising graphics, and portraits of people and animals. Today she leads Maieutica, striving to draw out the talents of fellow artist-craftspeople and show them to the world. Her mission is to show that increasingly popular artificial intelligence stands no chance against true human creativity, and that creating holds greater value than mere reproduction.

In addition to running Maieutica, Jagoda teaches Brazilian Zouk at a dance studio. She is also passionate about psychology, neurobiology, dietetics, writing, fantasy, and RPG games.

Wojciech Ziemba
Writer, author

Wojciech Ziemba

He made his publishing debut in 2020 with a volume of poetry. He continued his writing journey by later publishing crime novels as well. He now has several books to his name and is also known under the pen name Matthew Black. He continues to develop his craft, also working on children's stories and comics.

Writing gives him immense joy and satisfaction. His wide-ranging abilities and gift of observation constantly fill him with new ideas that break through human patterns and are poured onto paper without taboo subjects. He does not chase fashion or technological novelties; instead, as a keen observer, he can see beauty in ugliness.

He is an admirer of the works of J. R. R. Tolkien, Andrzej Pilipiuk, and Garfield Reeves-Stevens, as well as scholarly and historical literature by authors such as Norman Davies, Anthony Beevor, and others. He is passionate about military history and war games, which is why he readily claims he would have found himself perfectly at home in the realities of the Second World War.

Despite his love of poetry, he does not consider himself a romantic. He values solitude and silence deeply, which makes him something of a loner who keeps his distance from people. He also loves music and wandering. During his school years he performed as a band's vocalist. It is also worth mentioning that Wojciech was awarded the OSP Knight's Cross.

Makramenka
Handicraft artist

Makramenka

She has always had an artist's soul. The times in which she grew up, which she remembers with affectionate nostalgia, taught her that if you want to have something, you simply have to make it yourself. That is how she developed her skills, and now she is doing her best to use them in handicraft. Life gives her so many ideas that sometimes she cannot decide which one to make first.

That is why among her works you can find not only macrame, which she fell in love with in childhood, but also crochet pieces and works sewn on a machine. “That's just how I am — I see something and, like a little child, I simply have to have it,” says Makramenka. She treats challenges in handicraft like solving a complicated puzzle: how was this made?

Today Makramenka's works include handmade baskets, trays, placemats, bags and accessories, macrame owls, festive decorations, and many other beautiful ornaments that can bring life to your home. Do you have a different challenge for her? Be sure to ask if she can do it. She genuinely enjoys creating handicraft, and if her work can make someone happy, it gives her the extra satisfaction of knowing that what she does has meaning. She pours her great heart and love into every handmade piece.

Outside of creating handicraft, Makramenka is also passionate about cooking, healthy eating, and cosmetics, and she is, above all, a loving wife and mother.

Natalia Balicka
Illustrator, graphic artist, craft maker / booky.art

Natalia Balicka

From an early age, she loved creating art. At school she always took part in competitions with real commitment, and she devoted every free moment to drawing. Even in primary school she sketched animals in an ordinary notebook using pencil, recreating them from photographs. Around that time she received her first sketchbook, where over the following years she created a wide range of designs — that was when her love of fashion was born.

Even so, she constantly returned to drawing animals and portraits, which fascinated her the most. At the age of 14 she began experimenting more intensely with form and technique. She created portraits, landscapes, and animal depictions using pencils, paints, pastels, crayons, and markers — anything that came into her hands. In 2018 she found the courage to publish her first work on an art Instagram account. It was there that the dream appeared: to create commissioned drawings and develop her passion in a more professional direction.

Continuing her artistic path, Natalia chose an art high school, where she developed a particular love for printmaking and lithography — it was in this technique that she created her diploma work. During high school her love of books was also born; to this day she runs an Instagram profile where, alongside books, she shows her own bookmark designs and handicraft. Beyond drawing, she loves photography and contact with nature, which calms and inspires her. She also creates embroidery and continues to grow in journaling and scrapbooking. She is constantly searching for new forms of expression, deepening her artistic sensitivity.
